The Course

Anyone who owns a pet or works with animals will benefit from a pet first aid Certificate...

DELIVERED BY A FULLY QUALIFIED RCVS REGISTERED VETERINARY NURSE.

First aid for dogs and cats, just as it is for humans, is simply what it says. It is all about responding immediately to an emergency happening that might otherwise seriously impact the health and well-being of your pet. It’s having the ability and knowledge to make a very speedy response, because you may not otherwise have time to call the vet (which you need someone to do in tandem with your First Aid treatment) or have the time to search for the precise remedy required. Most probably on top of all this, you won’t possess the correct tools and the years of training a vet has to fully apply the correct procedure or prescribe and administer the medicines required.

OUR SMARTBREEDER IN-HOUSE FIRST AID FOR PETS QUALIFICATION REQUIRES NO PREVIOUS QUALIFICATIONS OR EXPERIENCE.

The course duration is typically 1 day and takes place at our State-Of-The-Art training academy in Manchester City Centre, with free parking. Just 5 minutes from Piccadilly train station.

Designed & delivered with “the beginner in mind” using a step by step easy to understand no nonsense approach - NO technical jargon & NO difficult language used. Our full First Aid For Pets qualification costs only £199

Your Instructor

Danielle

Hello there I’m Danielle, I qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2009 and have been in the veterinary industry for 16 years.

I have spent the majority of my time working in a 24 hour emergency referral hospital, and dealt with a vast amount of cases on a daily basis.

Working in this environment taught me that the outcome of an emergency case very much depends on the initial care given at the time of the incident, this is why I am so passionate about teaching our clients about first aid.

An owners response is crucial, if I can educate you on how to administer emergency care whilst seeking veterinary advise, this will help reduce fatalities and in my line of work this is our main goal.

COURSE TOPICS

1. Intro

First aid for dogs and cats, just as it is for humans,
is simply what it says. It is all about responding immediately to an emergency happening that might otherwise seriously impact the health and well-being of your pet.

2. Your pet's aid kit and suggested contents

You should have the contact name and details of your regular vet, telephone number, mobile number, email address, regular address, times of opening, any emergency numbers and/or any out of hours telephone numbers in a small notebook so that the dog’s weight, previous illnesses and any treatments (previous or emergency) can be recorded and the telephone number of a taxi company in case there is no transport available.

3. A basic health assessment of your pet

Your vet will more than likely only see your pet once or maybe twice a year, and even then, unless as a result of a medical incident, it may only be for check- ups or the likes of worming. As the owner, you are with your pet every day of the year. This means you are very strongly placed to be able to immediately recognise when things aren’t quite what they should be.

4. Pain in pets

It is often quite hard to detect when dogs and cats are in pain. The only real way to notice is to be fully aware of their behaviour changing from outside the normal behaviour you have come to expect.

5. Triage

It’s all very well knowing how best to appraise your pet’s vital signs and any effects they have on its health. You must also be able to quickly evaluate how severe any problems might be, whether medical or physical. This is even more so should there be numerous injuries, say as the result of being run over in traffic.

6. Colour of skin and gums

Veterinarians generally use the colour of structures such as the “whites” of the eyes and the gums above the animal’s teeth to gauge a pet’s health, since the colour of the skin is normally very hard to see and evaluate because of their coats.

7. Dehydration test

It’s relatively simple to determine a potential loss of fluid or any dehydration with your pet. The relative elasticity of the skin means that under normal conditions and with balanced water levels, the scruff of the neck is very easy to gently grab hold of. When you pull up the scruff and then let go again, if all is normal, the skin should spring back immediately to its regular position. It’s not a bad idea to test the top of the head in the first instance, because the skin there will probably show the result more easily.

8. Heart rate

As it is for humans, to measure your pet’s heart rate and check whether it is normal or not, they should firstly sit or lie in as relaxed a position as possible. With some pets, this can be difficult, especially with younger ones that may just think you are playing a new game, or others that may not be too happy to either remain still or be handled.

9. Neutering your pet

It is a very sad fact that thousands of, in particular, unwanted and unexpected puppies and kittens are put to sleep every year. Animal shelters around the country can be overflowing with these unfortunate animals who wait for their ill-fated end.

10. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

CPR combines artificial respiration with external heart compressions. This assists with moving blood around the body should the heart stop beating. Follow the instructions for rescue breathing, and alternate this with standard chest compressions. Two people should perform CPR, with one doing the breathing for the pet while the other person undertakes the chest compressions.
